An Oregon youth football program: from one volunteer to a fully equipped program

Set up by our founder as a volunteer, before North Star Computing was founded.

The program

The program had dwindled to one person. Fundraising had stopped completely, and the equipment was old and worn out or didn't exist.

What happened

Five dads got together and set the program up as a 501(c)(3) with dedicated roles for fundraising, grant writing and coach mentoring. Our founder set up everything behind it: a Google Workspace with five role-based volunteer logins, a program domain, a website, shared documents, and the club's email and sponsor contacts.

The result

Within a couple of seasons, the club had raised enough to replace about 90% of its equipment, including new helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys, pants, a portable scoreboard, yard markers, practice balls and goal posts. It also had a budget to help families who couldn't pay the registration fee. As the equipment and coaching improved, participation grew every year.

The handoff

When it was time for our founder to move on, he created a login for his replacement and walked her through the folder structure on a screen share. She had immediate access to the program's full history, documents, emails, sponsor contacts and financial books, so the program could keep going without losing momentum.

Our founder started as an assistant youth coach and finished as the club's president. The setup was used for about 5 years.
